Values Underlying the Exceptional Life
Here we return to Cop Macdonald’s Sense of the Exceptional Life, but this time he links each characteristic with what to him appear to be the values which underly that characteristic or are associated with it. Doing what you love to do a substantial percentage of the time. Doing what feels both exciting and right to you. self-actualization (Abraham Maslow), bliss (Joseph Campbell), flow (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi) Doing things that benefit others. love, self-actualization, compassion, harmony, the well-being of others Doing creative things: producing uniqueness and novelty that has value. creativity, accomplishment, self-actualization Dealing with situations appropriately, using a large repertoire of approaches and techniques. Choosing the approach that best fits each situation: appropriate planning, appropriate timing, appropriate problem-solving, dealing with commitments appropriately, etc. harmony, the well-being of others, accomplishment, peace, creativity Honesty, respect, and integrity in dealing with others. honesty, respect, integrity, truth, the well-being of others A primary (domestic) relationship that is mutually enabling and enhancing. friendship, love, giving, growing, learning, self-actualization, the well-being of others A rich and rewarding web of relationships involving widespread benefits to self and others. friendship, love, giving, growing, learning, self-actualization, the well-being of others Attentiveness. awareness, love, understanding, clarity, harmonious functioning A feeling of responsibility for one's choices and actions. responsibility, autonomy, self-sufficiency, love A positive, "let's make the most of it" attitude. love, accomplishment, harmony, progress, self-actualization, completion A reality-seeking, truth-seeking orientation. reality, knowledge, truth, understanding, learning, openness A desire to learn, and to develop inwardly. This is coupled with the understanding that learning and inner development are one's own responsibility. learning, self-actualization, accomplishment, responsibility, openness A slowly-developing understanding of "the laws of life." An ever-deepening appreciation of causes and consequences in life situations. learning, attentiveness, compassion, reality, self-knowledge, openness Frequent experiences of wonder. wonder, learning, attentiveness, openness, the sacredness of existence Happiness and quiet joy - coupled with an understanding of what allows these mind states to be experienced and what obscures them. inner peace, attentiveness, learning, understanding, reality, self-knowledge Feeling compassion toward others. love, compassion, the well-being of others Self-discipline: the ability to work now for a reward later. self-discipline, accomplishment A fully-functioning mind. The balanced, integrated use of intellect and intuition, coupled with the ability to deal skillfully with reactive emotions. self-knowledge, self-actualization, reality, attentiveness An understanding of how to craft an exceptional life, starting with an appreciation of the difference between the structural and the moment-to-moment aspects of life. attentiveness, self-knowledge, learning, reality, openness Courage: the ability to act with clarity and skill despite the presence of dangers and fears. courage, accomplishment, self-actualization, clarity --------------------------- Underlying all of the above is one more value. A fundamental one. A desire to have one's life count for something. We want our lives to be significant.
