Values, Computer Programs, and the Laws of Nature
The universe functions according to a complex set of rules and procedures which we call natural law. We can look at natural law, in total, as the master program which defines what can and can't happen, what will and won't happen, as the universe evolves. Science has been investigating subroutines and subprograms of this master program and has been referring to them as separate, individual, laws of nature. Any single law of nature is just part of the program. Science -- looking at a few laws at a time -- has done very poorly at seeing the values inherent in the entire set of physical laws taken together -- the entire "program" of natural law. With their eyes fixed on the limited knowledge that experimental apparatus can deliver, most scientists have ignored what has interested philosophers and spiritual seers: How the whole program of natural law works, how all the program subroutines work together, the ways in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and the values which underlie the process. Each law of nature not only defines a specific aspect of behavior, but it interlocks with other laws. There is a pattern in the way these laws work together. A computer program is not just a jumble of subroutines, it is a patterned goal-oriented activity. The subroutines work together in very specific ways in accord with the design of the overall program. The large-scale effects of many laws-of-nature operating simultaneously cannot be predicted by analyzing an individual law any more than you could predict how a complex computer program would function from the behavior of its individual subroutines. If someone took apart a complex computer program and handed you a basketful of subroutines, you'd know a lot about the subroutines but little or nothing about the overall program from which they were taken. Human knowledge is in a similar bind. Most scientists have been looking at small pieces of the whole, and dealing with just a few laws at a time. Philosophers, spiritual seers, and a few scientific generalists have been looking at the whole. Their reports on the overall program may not have been as detailed and accurate as the reports on the subroutines, but they are at least as important. It's time for science, too, to widen its view and the scope of its investigations.
