Things to Do Until Clarity Comes About What to Do With the Rest of My Life
Until I am clear about my mission in life and have embarked on a course of action to carry it out, finding that mission and figuring out how to live it must remain my primary tasks.
1. Explore any tentative interests you already have, or explore randomly until you find some interests. * Through Reading (Read books about the things that interest you. If you have no interests, browse your public or university library at random and in a quiet state of mind. Books will jump out at you. Take them. Read them.) * Via the Internet (Use the Web to make contact with people and resources in various areas of interest, or simply browse to discover things that interest you.) * By Getting Involved with Organizations (If there are local groups of people who share an interest of yours, join them. Or join national groups and get their newsletters and journals.) If these explorations heighten an interest that already exists or lead to some new interest, then ACT. Run some active experiments. Try things. In some way or another actively pursue the interest. The aim is to find interests that get increasingly exciting as your involvement with them increases. 2. If you think you might like to work to help solve one or more of the problems of your community or the world: * Find out more about the problems that interest you. (Again: read, use the Internet, and investigate existing organizations.) * Volunteer your time to an existing organization * Start a new organization * Do something personally creative which addresses a problem that interests you: Write an article or book. Create a work of art. Invent a solution. 3. If you have doubts about being able to accomplish something significant with your life, go on a quest to inspire yourself. Read biographies of people you admire. 4. As part of your mission-finding activity, keep a notebook or journal and write in it every day. Writing helps to clarify our thinking, and it often helps important material move from the subconscious mind into consciousness. 5. Develop some generally-useful skills. If there are skills that you suspect might eventually play a role in your new, expanded life - especially general-purpose skills such as * public speaking, or * writing, don't wait. Start to develop one or more of those skills now. (Join Toastmasters. Sign up for a writing course.) 6. Get in touch with others on a similar quest.
