Putting the Failure Bugaboo to Rest
The usual success/failure perspective is not a helpful way of looking at things. * The universe runs experiments. Evolution is all about trial and error experiments that, a small percentage of the time, actually improve things. * We human beings are outposts of universal process, and we, too, run experiments. * We run these experiments with various hopes, goals, and expectations in mind. * Sometimes the hopes, and goals, and expectations are met, sometimes they aren't. Regardless of the outcome, the experiment itself is still a valid and necessary act. It is part of an overall success-finding strategy, part of an attempt to move things forward in some sense, to make things somehow better. The only real failure is not to engage in this process. The only real failure is not to run experiments. * In addition to being part of this overall success-finding strategy, each experiment is also a teacher. Each experiment is an encounter with reality, during which something happens -- whether that something was hoped for, or not. Each experiment, each unique set of circumstances and results, can teach us something worth learning if we are open to the lessons inherent in what happened. Trial and error is the technique the universe has used to improve the design of living things. And trial and error is the technique we humans must use to design better lives and a better world.
