Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Concept of Flow
Flow is a state of high enjoyment and optimum experience that often occurs when we are challenged to exercise control in a difficult situation -- particularly in situations where the level of challenge is a fairly close match to our level of skill at that task. When task difficulty and skill level nearly match we must concentrate on the task. This concentration on, and involvement in, the task removes from awareness the worries and frustrations of everyday life as well as concern for the self. It may also alter our sense of time, sometimes making time subjectively speed up, and sometimes making it slow down. The activity may be one that has both physical and mental challenges like mountain climbing, tennis, dance, or surgery; or it may be a primarily mental activity like playing chess, editing a tape or film, or writing a computer program. The flow experience requires that the levels of challenge and skill be reasonably well matched. When the challenge exceeds the skill, anxiety tends to arise. When the skill exceeds the challenge, boredom tends to arise. Life situations that allow us to escalate the challenge as we develop greater skill make it possible to keep repeating the flow experience over time. The mountain climber chooses progressively more difficult ascents. The artist and writer choose progressively more difficult artistic challenges. The presence of flow does not necessarily indicate that the activity one is involved with is a wise actvity. Criminals have reported being in the flow state during their crimes, as have scientists and engineers while designing weapons of mass destruction.
