Evolution's Legacy: Deficiencies of the Human Mind
1. We find it difficult to internalize the reality of our own impending death. 2. We have difficulty conceptualizing magnitudes that are vastly different from those we encounter in everyday life. We can't intuitively grasp very large quantities of anything, or tiny fractions of one. We can't cope with vast distances or submicroscopic distances, or very long duration or very short duration. 3. Our interests cluster around our daily lives--people and situations that are nearby in time, space, and relationship to us. 4. We notice sudden changes, but not gradual changes--the gradual worsening of situations, for example. 5. We tend not to appreciate the presence of interconnections unless they are perceptually obvious--the various person/environment connections, for example. 6. We tend not to appreciate that existence involves the interpenetration of two levels of reality: An absolute, noumenal, enduring, carrier- or medium-like reality. And a relative, transient, easily-changed informational reality. 7. We tend to oversimplify causation. We pick out some dominant element in a situation and call it "the Cause" when in fact there are a multitude of necessary elements and their causal matrices going back to the origin of the universe. 8. The identity delusion: our tendency to connect the primal feeling of existing with the body and mind events rather than with the universal process as a whole. 9. Attention tends to flit from object to object, and not to remain where consciousness would like to put it.
