Cop Macdonald’s Sense of the Exceptional Life
The exceptional life involves a rich outer life, often characterized by * Doing what you love to do a substantial percentage of the time. Doing what feels both exciting and right to you. * Doing things that benefit others. * Doing creative things: producing uniqueness and novelty that has value. * Dealing with situations appropriately, using a large repertoire of approaches and techniques. Choosing the approach that best fits each situation: appropriate planning, appropriate timing, appropriate problem-solving, dealing with commitments appropriately, etc. * Honesty, respect, and integrity in dealing with others. * A primary (domestic) relationship that is mutually enabling and enhancing. * A rich and rewarding web of other relationships involving widespread benefits to self and others. The exceptional life involves a rich inner life, often characterized by * Attentiveness. * A feeling of responsibility for one's choices and actions. * A positive, "let's make the most of it" attitude. * A reality-seeking, truth-seeking orientation. * A desire to learn, and to develop inwardly. This is coupled with the understanding that learning and inner development are one's own responsibility. * A slowly-developing understanding of "the laws of life." An ever-deepening appreciation of causes and consequences in life situations. * Frequent experiences of wonder. * Happiness and quiet joy -- coupled with an understanding of what allows these mind states to be experienced and what obscures them. * Feeling compassion toward others. * Self-discipline: the ability to work now for a reward later. * A fully-functioning mind. The balanced, integrated use of intellect and intuition, coupled with the ability to deal skillfully with reactive emotions. * An understanding of how to craft an exceptional life, starting with an appreciation of the difference between the structural and the moment-to-moment aspects of life. * Courage: the ability to act with clarity and skill despite the presence of dangers and fears.
